The blue ribbon has been untied at Wentworth

Following much political drama, Independent candidate Kerryn Phelps has claimed victory on the Wenthworth by-election.

It comes after ABC analysts has called the by-election in favour of independent candidate Dr Kerryn Phelps.

The by-election blue-ribbon Liberal seat of Wentworth has been held by the Liberal Party and its predecessors since Federation and today the blue ribbon has been untied.

Early results showed a 30% swing against the Liberals at Wentworth, but this is now a disaster for the Liberals.
Labor MP Linda Burney said the results suggest the Prime Minister may need to consider calling a general election. She said, “this is such a monumental wipe-out in one of the safest Liberal seats in the country”.

It has been a contest between the Liberals’ Dave Sharma and independent candidate Dr Kerryn Phelps.

Counting continues, however over 12% of the vote has been counted and Mr Sharma secured only 36% of first preferences. Making these early results disastrous for the Liberal Party.

Yesterday the Prime Minister said, “in the last 24 hours we’ve heard that the leading independent candidate has said that she could not guarantee not bringing down the Government on a vote of confidence in the Government”. “Now that’s serious stuff”, said Mr Morrison.

Now that Phelps has won, the Coalition loses its majority in the House, making it harder to pass legislation, meaning they will need to lean on the crossbench for support.
