Roger Federer Visits Cottesloe Beach ahead of the Hopman Cup.

On Sunday, the 1st of January, more than 96,000 tennis fans are expected to attend Perth Arena for the start of the Perth Hopman Cup.

17-time Grand Slam champion and tennis icon Roger Federer is expected to draw most of the crowds. Federer landed in Perth today, this is the first time he’s been in WA for 15 years.

Premier Colin Barnett greeted him at Cottesloe Beach, where Federer made a statement to the press about his knee injury before playing with kids in the sand.

The Hopman Cup will be his return to competition after almost six months’ recuperation from the injury.

“I’m really looking forward to the Hopman Cup, I’m just really happy I can play tennis again, I can play points and I think the body’s going to be fine”, he says.

“Personally, my family and I have been looking forward to this trip for weeks now, I’ve been training so hard trying to get ready for this. It was a big goal of mine to arrive here in good shape and I’m finally here, and I definitely feel the love.”

“People are so nice to us, I don’t get this kind of welcome every week, so this is really nice. I get to enjoy the local places of the city and of Western Australia, it’s beautiful. I hope of course I can see a bit more this week”.

Federer last competed at the Hopman Cup in 2002 with his now-wife Mirka, after winning the event as a 19-year-old in 2001 with Martina Hingis.

Premier and Tourism Minister, Colin Barnett says he’s excited about Federer being here for the event.

Mr Barnett says, “as well as attracting visitors into Perth, Mastercard Hopman Cup 2017 will be broadcast around the world, providing the perfect platform to showcase our ever-changing city and State. This year’s exceptional line-up of international tennis stars, headlined by Roger Federer, will also attract huge traditional and social media coverage.”

“Events such as the Mastercard Hopman Cup form an important part of the State Government’s strategy to grow the value of tourism in Western Australia to $12 billion by 2020,” Mr Barnett said.

Federer is representing Switzerland at the Mastercard Hopman Cup, which is on at the Perth Arena, January 1-7, 2017.
