US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced the US will help North Korea to achieve economic prosperity similar to South Korea if it denuclearises.
Mr Pompeo has just returned from talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, which he characterised as “warm” and “constructive.
“We had good conversations about the histories of our two nations, the challenges that we have had between us,” Mr Pompeo said.
“We talked about the fact that America has often in history had adversaries who we are now close partners with and our hope that we could achieve the same with respect to North Korea.”
Mr Pompeo also secured the release of three Korean-Americans, arrested for ‘anti-state’ activities, during the meetings.
The talks followed the announcement of a meeting between Mr Kim and US President Donald Trump, which will be held in Singapore on June 12.
Mr Trump celebrated the announcement of the meeting on Twitter.
“The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th,” he said.
“We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!”
