A joint air strike against Syria performed by the US, Britain and France has hit a Damascus scientific research facility and arms depots in the Homs area according to state media.

The Russian ambassador, Anatoly Antonov to the United States has warned that there will be consequences for the strike, claiming it was an insult to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

“Insulting the President of Russia is unacceptable and inadmissible,” Antonov said in a news conference.

“The U.S. – the possessor of the biggest arsenal of chemical weapons – has no moral right to blame other countries.”

The strike by western forces is the largest against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, taken in response to a poison gas attack.

US President Donald Trump announced the attack in a press conference, where he condemned Assad’s use of chemical weapons.

“This massacre was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very terrible regime,” he said.

Syrian state media has labelled the attack a “flagrant violation of international law”.
