US President Donald Trump praised Rob Porter, the White House aide who resigned this week amid allegations of abuse by his two former wives.
Mr Trump stressed that Mr Porter maintains his innocence, and wished him well.
“He says he’s innocent, and I think you have to remember that. He said very strongly yesterday that he’s innocent,” Mr Trump said.
“It’s obviously a tough time for him. He did a very good job in the White House. And we hope he has a wonderful career. But we absolutely wish him well.”
Allegations against Mr Porter had been known for months, but it wasn’t until pictures of one of the ex-wives, suffering a bruised eye from the alleged assault that action occurred.
Chief of Staff John Kelly has come under fire for defending Mr Porter, calling him a “man of integrity”, even after being made aware of the allegations.
Mr Kelly had been aware that Mr Porter’s security clearance was being held up by investigations into the abuse allegations for several months when he defended him.
