US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has accused Russia of undermining the international sanctions on North Korea.
Mr Pompeo said the sanctions are necessary to maintain pressure on North Korea to convince Pyongyang to stop its nuclear program and give up its nuclear weapons.
“Russia has actively attempted to undermine the U.N. Security Council resolutions, the work of the … committee at the U.N. that evaluates compliance with sanctions,” he said.
Mr Pompeo also backed up US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, who accused Moscow of covering up a report that detailed the sanction violations.
Mr Pompeo called for the UN sanctions committee to “publish the original document that they intended to publish which shows clear activities related to sanctions and sanctions violations.”
“The United States is as committed as ever to continuing to enforce those U.N. Security Council resolutions,” he said.
“We believe they are central to President Trump’s efforts to convince Chairman Kim that full, final denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is necessary.”
