A 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit Java just before midnight at 11:47pm local time, collapsing buildings and leaving at least two dead.
Tremors were felt throughout the island, including the capital of Jakarta about 200kms where buildings were swaying.
So far a 62-year old man and an 80-year old woman have been confirmed as dead from the earthquake, though there are fears there may be more.
It has been reported that more than 40 houses collapsed and around 65 more suffered severe damage.
The Earthquake triggered tsunami warnings along parts of Java’s coastline, but these have since been lifted.
Tremors were felt for up to 30 seconds throughout the island, causing many to flee outside, creating heavy traffic as many tried to flee coastal areas.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake was about 91 kilometres deep and located just inland.
