Western Australia’s low contribution to national firearm amnesty

The National Firearm Amnesty has seen Western Australia recover only 521 guns, only making up 2% of the total.

Since July 1st, 26,000 guns have been handed into police for crushing.

Jeff Andrijasevich, WA Police firearms licensing inspector, said an explanation for the low recovery rate was that a similar 2013 WA amnesty saw more than 1,200 weapons surrendered.

With the amnesty only running until September 30th, the State Government is encouraging people to hand in their illegal or unlicensed guns to WA Police Stations where they will be confiscated and crushed.
