WA Police will provide a new crime statistics portal on its website, in a bid to provide a greater level of crime information and explanatory material.
The portal was launched by WA Police on Wednesday to providing more comprehensive, reliable data to depict the state’s crime accurately for police, policy makers and the public.
Crime data will be released quarterly following a review of WA Police crime recording and reporting practices.
It made a number of recommendations to improve the way WA Police records, complies with, analyses and reports crime statistics to align the state with national crime recording standards.
Improvements to the crime statistics portal will include an overview of crime trends in WA and a simple look up tool providing interactive data and charts for individual suburbs.
A greater level of information and detail on each offence category will also be available as well as downloadable reports of crime statistics dating back 10 years.
The change to more rigorous crime data recording and analysis practices incorporates technical and recording changes and improved governance.
The July to September quarter will be the first release of information using the new practices.
