Following today’s announcement on the future of the Margaret River Pro, there has been uncertainty whether other events in regional areas will continue to have support.
Shadow Minister for tourism, Libby Mettam, is unsure about the future of the McGowan Government funding for events.
The Margaret River Gourmet Escape and the IronmanWA Busselton Triathlon, both of which are major tourism draw cards to the Southwest.
“The best way to promote regional areas, and to attract interstate or international tourists to the area, is promoting it through destination market funding and part of that is through the hook of an event; a reason to visit,” she explained.
Ms Mettam said promoting these events on a world scale, not only supports the local businesses, but also the state, as tourism through the capital cities to the regional areas increases.
A $9.5 million return support for local businesses was gained by Margaret River hosting the Gourmet Escape.
“These events attract people to the state and are vital in conditioning the value of an area. I would hate to see us lose more iconic events,” she said.
