United States President Donald Trump has declared emergencies in Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S Virgin Islands as hurricane Irma threatens heads towards land.
Mr Trump’s declarations authorise the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to organise relief efforts.
It also directs FEMA to deploy to the soon-to-be-hit regions ahead of the storm’s landfall.
“This will free up much needed federal funding and assistance as we prepare for Irma,” Florida Governor Rick Scott said during a press conference.
Puerto Rico’s governor is also warning that the effects of Hurricane Irma could be catastrophic and more dangerous than Hurricane Harvey.
The Category 5 storm has created the most powerful winds ever recorded by a storm in the Atlantic Ocean.
It could move towards Florida over the weekend.
