Canada has granted Rahaf Alqunun asylum following the Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) officially given the high-profile teenage asylum seeker refugee status.
Eighteen-year-old Saudi Arabian Rahaf Alqunun fled her country last week, claiming that she was abused by her family, and would be killed if she returned because she has renounced Islam.
She was caught while in transit in Thailand, before she could fly to Australia to apply for asylum.
It was only after she barricaded herself in a hotel room at Suvarnabhumi airport for two days and sent out global pleas via social media that the stance of the Thai immigration official softened.
Following negotiations, she has been placed under the protection of the UNHCR, who has since processed her request for asylum.
