Senior Police Officer Stood Down After Hitting Man in Arrest

A senior WA police officer involved in an incident in which a man was knocked down by a police car has been stood down.

Police said the decision to stand the senior sergeant down from all operational activity pending the outcome of an investigation came after additional footage of the incident was provided to police.

An 18-year-old man was struck by a police vehicle on Sunday.

He was treated for injuries in hospital.

Officers had responded to a call about suspicious activity earlier when they located the man.

A scuffle ensued and he fled on foot but was struck by the police vehicle involved in the search on nearby Wilfred Road about 3pm before being arrested.

The actions of police in the arrest are being investigated by the Internal Affairs Unit.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police on 131 444.

Excuse me for pointing this out, but the accompanying video shows quite clearly that far from ‘fleeing’ from anyone/anywhere, the gentleman in question appears to be almost sauntering! Admittedly, he may have been running previously, but at the time he was struck, he was not fleeing, and I think it a misleading wording for you to use.
    Cheers
