A respected Indigenous leader has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Western Australia’s tourism board.
Indigenous Business Australia head of Innovation and Strategy Kia Dowell will bring experience in economic development, Aboriginal leadership and business, replacing former commissioner Elizabeth Gaines.
At Indigenous Business Australia, Ms Dowell was responsible for delivering a five-year national strategy for the organisation.
The organisation is currently the lead Commonwealth agency for Aboriginal economic development.
She has also provided service to other boards including Aboriginal consulting from Codeswitch which she co-founded, Macquarie Groups’ First Australians Employee Engagement Group and Chairperson of the Gelganyem Trust board linked to Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine.
Tourism Minister Paul Papalia welcomed Ms Dowell to the board as Ms Gaines resigned from the Tourism WA Board after being appointed Chief Executive of Fortescue Metals Group.
