British Prime Minister Theresa May has hit an ‘impasse’ in her negotiations with the European Union on Brexit.
Ms May challenged the EU to come up with its own Brexit plan after they rejected her “Chequers” plan.
The EU wants Ms May to relent on her position on trade and customs arrangements for the UK border with Ireland.
Ms May hit back at the EU in an angry press conference, demanding the same respect she is showing the EU and saying neither side should expect the impossible.
“Throughout this process, I have treated the EU with nothing but respect,” Ms May said.
“The UK expects the same. A good relationship at the end of this process depends on it.”
Ms May also attacked the EU for not offering counter-proposals or attempting to negotiate on their position.
“It’s not acceptable to simply reject the other side’s proposals without a detailed explanation and counter proposals,” Ms May said.
“So we now need to hear from the EU what the real issues are, what their alternative is, so that we can discuss them. Until we do, we cannot make progress.”
