New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has called for a full investigation into allegations that four12-year-old African American girls were strip-searched for drugs on 15th of January at East Middle School in Binghampton, upstate New York, due to “serious concerns of racial and gender bias”.
Governor Cuomo said that “Asking a child to remove her clothing — and then commenting on her body — is shaming, humiliating, traumatic sexual harassment.”
Parents of the four girls claimed their daughters were told to remove their clothing to be searched for drugs, and they missed schools for several days because “they no longer feel safe” at school.
More than 100 people rallied outside the school on Tuesday to pressure Binghamton City School District officials into taking action, a week after a crowd spoke out against the incident at a schoolboard meeting.
The District officials initially said that the girls were not strip-searched, however then indicated on Tuesday that they have fired a local law to investigate the matter.
