US vetoes Security Council resolution to protect Palestinian civilians

The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution drafted by Kuwait that called for the protection of Palestinian civilians.

The US was also the only nation to back its call to condemn Hamas for recent violence in the Gaza strip.

The US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, criticised the UN for its response, saying it shows bias against Israel.

“It is now completely clear that the UN is hopelessly biased against Israel,” she said.

More than 120 Palestinians have been killed and thousands more wounded by Israeli troops during continued violent responses to peaceful protests by Palestinians about the Gaza Strip.

Among the dead was a nurse who was shot whilst trying to help a wounded protester at the Gaza border.

According to witnesses the nurse, Razan Al-Najar, was wearing a white uniform and holding her hands clearly above her head as she ran towards the border fence to reach the casualty.

Israel has so far refused to comment on the shooting of Ms Najar.
