The City of Fremantle is celebrating NAIDOC Week, with special community events for all ages.
The NAIDOC Week theme this year ‘Because of her, we can!’ highlights the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played in the community.
Fremantle Deputy Mayor, Ingrid Wilson explained it’s important to educate youth on aboriginal culture through events like NAIDOC Week, and having the opening this Sunday at Hilton PCYC is a great initiative to get youth involved.
“I think probably aboriginal women and tourist strait islander women are very strong, and are known for their strength and carrying their communities forward and looking after their own communities,” She said.
“As are women in any culture, so I think its a wonderful time that we can acknowledge them.
“I think it’s important for all ages to learn and have a greater understanding of the aboriginal culture and the importance that it has to our everyday life.”
The full program of events this week can be found on the City Of Fremantle’s website.
