2018 Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games

The 2018 Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games commence this weekend, with over 3,000 serving, retired personnel and registered volunteers from Police and Emergency Services competing from the 28th of October to November 3rd.

The Opening Ceremony on Sunday night at Mandurah foreshore welcomes members of the public to attend, with festivities including a torch relay, a parade of competitors, official welcomes, live music and fireworks.

Deputy Commissioner (Specialist Services), Stephen Brown, said public events like the opening ceremony allows people to display their support first hand, all while enjoying wonderful entertainment and the beautiful facilities Mandurah affords.

“The Games provide a unique opportunity for members of the community to show their appreciation for the fine work carried out every day by our emergency responders right across Australasia,” said Deputy Commissioner Brown.

Alongside interstate competitors, more than 200 international contingents from New Zealand, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Caledonia will also be competing.

An additional 7,000 supporters, officials and volunteers are also expected to attend.

More than 50 sporting events will be staged across the Games, including traditional team and individual sports showcasing specific work skills like shooting, fire truck pull and surf lifesaving.

Deputy Commissioner Brown said this event is extraordinary games for extraordinary people.

“For the competitors, it’s a chance to socialise outside of the stresses of their working lives in a positive environment that fosters physical and mental benefits. This is all about collaboration, competition and comradery,” he said.

The Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games is projected to inject $2.5 million dollars into the WA economy, with majority of the event managing services being locally sourced and providing opportunities for small, medium and large business within Mandurah.
On the business side, the Games are projected to inject $2.5 million into the WA economy.
